Craig Swift-McNair has served as the General Manager of Woollahra Municipal Council in Sydney since July 2020. With over two decades in local government, including roles at Port Macquarie-Hastings and Greater Taree City Councils, his career reflects a blend of public service and private sector experience.
At Woollahra, Swift-McNair has focused on financial sustainability, digital transformation, and enhancing organisational culture. Under his leadership, the Council transitioned from a $4 million deficit to a near $1 million surplus by 2023. This turnaround involved difficult decisions, including restructuring, but was guided by a clear purpose and values-based approach. Swift-McNair emphasises the importance of aligning leadership around shared goals and fostering a respectful, values-led workplace culture. He believes that embedding purpose into leadership behaviours, not just branding, is crucial for organisational transformation.
Beyond his role at Woollahra, Swift-McNair contributes to the broader local government sector as Vice President of Local Government Professionals Australia, NSW. Since joining the Board in 2018, he has advocated for diversity, professional development, and stronger sector-wide collaboration. His vision includes expanding membership, enhancing member benefits, and promoting diversity within the sector.
Swift-McNair's leadership is characterised by honesty, integrity, and accountability. He is dedicated to building a strengths-based and values-driven organisation that not only delivers on its purpose but also provides its people with opportunities to grow in their roles and as individuals. This approach ultimately leads to improved customer experiences and services for the community.
