David Handley, a former lawyer turned social entrepreneur, is the visionary founder of Sculpture by the Sea, Australia's largest free outdoor sculpture exhibition. Established in 1997, the event transforms the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk into a dynamic, open-air gallery, attracting nearly half a million visitors annually.

Handley's journey from law to art was inspired by a visit to a sculpture garden in Klatovy, Czech Republic, in the mid-1990s. Moved by the integration of art within a natural setting, he envisioned a similar experience in Australia. Despite having no background in sculpture, Handley founded Sculpture by the Sea with a modest marketing budget of $400, yet the inaugural exhibition drew 25,000 attendees.

The exhibition's success led to its expansion, with the Perth edition launching in 2005 and an international presence in Aarhus, Denmark, in 2009. Handley has also produced exhibitions for the Sydney Olympic Arts Festival and served on various cultural boards, including the Australian Museum Trust.

Sculpture by the Sea has become a significant cultural event, showcasing over 2,600 sculptures by artists from 51 countries. It serves as a platform for artists to present their work in a public space, fostering community engagement and appreciation for the arts.

This 3D portrait of David Handley is seen standing with a seagull at his feet, hopefullycapturing the essence of his connection to the sea and his commitment to integrating art with nature. The seagull symbolizes the coastal environment that has been central to Sculpture by the Sea, while Handley's stance reflects his role as a steadfast advocate for public art.

This portrait hopes to honor Handley's contributions to the arts but also encapsulates the spirit of Sculpture by the Sea—where art meets the ocean, and the public is invited to experience creativity in its most natural form.
