Henri Matisse remains one of the defining figures of twentieth-century art. Known for his bold use of colour, simplified forms and extraordinary sense of balance, Matisse transformed painting and sculpture into something both modern and deeply human. His later cut-out works, created with painted paper and scissors, reduced art to shape, colour and rhythm with remarkable confidence and clarity.

This 3D portrait places Matisse alongside one of his iconic blue sculptural forms, creating a dialogue between the artist and his own visual language. Rather than presenting a formal monument, the work aims to capture something quieter and more reflective — the presence of an ageing artist still surrounded by invention and creativity.

Part of Simon Fieldhouse’s ongoing series of hand-painted 3D portraits, the piece combines contemporary digital modelling with traditional sculptural painting techniques. The visible brushwork and miniature scale give the work an intimate quality, while the strong blue form references the bold simplicity and sculptural elegance that made Matisse one of the great innovators of modern art.
