Budapest – Pen and Ink Portraits of a Grand European Capital
Welcome to my Budapest gallery — a collection of pen and ink drawings capturing the elegance, complexity, and layered history of Hungary’s remarkable capital city. Straddling the Danube River, Budapest is a city defined by its contrasts: East and West, Baroque and Brutalist, grandeur and decay. My drawings focus on the architectural richness of Budapest — from the soaring spires of Matthias Church and the neo-Gothic magnificence of the Hungarian Parliament to quiet side streets lined with faded 19th-century facades.
Budapest is a city with a deep soul. It wears its past openly, with visible traces of imperial Austro-Hungarian ambition, war, revolution, and post-communist transformation. This blend of resilience and faded glory makes it a dream for anyone drawn to architectural character. Through these illustrations, I’ve tried to honour the city’s dramatic skyline and its quieter moments — the wrought-iron balconies, ornate cafés, and bridges that tie Buda and Pest together.
Each piece in this series is drawn by hand in pen and ink, using traditional techniques to celebrate the enduring lines and forms of Budapest’s built environment. There’s a rhythm to the repetition of windows, columns, and cornices — something that echoes the pulse of the city itself.
This gallery is part of my ongoing project to document the world’s great cities through their architecture — to freeze in time the facades and structures that give each place its identity. If you’re interested in art that pays tribute to cultural heritage, urban storytelling, and architectural beauty, I hope you’ll find something here that resonates.
