Dunedin – Pen and Ink Portraits of a Southern Gothic City

Welcome to my Dunedin gallery — a series of pen and ink drawings capturing the architectural charm, historical layers, and cultural singularity of one of New Zealand’s most characterful cities. Perched on the rugged Otago coast, Dunedin is a city shaped by its Scottish foundations, Victorian confidence, and academic life. Its streets and skylines reveal a colonial outpost that aspired to grandeur — and in many ways, achieved it.

Dunedin is a place where history lingers in stone. From the soaring campanile of Knox Church and the storied halls of the University of Otago to the flamboyant flourishes of the Dunedin Railway Station, the city’s buildings speak of a time when ambition was cast in Oamaru limestone and slate. Yet beyond the landmarks, there are the quieter details — cast iron verandahs, weathered villas, and narrow lanes winding through hills — all of which find their way into my drawings.

This gallery celebrates Dunedin’s unique blend of Southern Gothic architecture, academic energy, and natural drama. Each illustration is hand-drawn using traditional pen and ink methods, with close attention to the textures, lines, and rhythm that define the city’s built environment.

As with my other city series, this work is part of a broader project to honour the architectural language of great urban centres. Dunedin may be small on the world stage, but it punches above its weight in terms of cultural heritage and structural beauty — and I hope this series reflects that.
