Michael Wright — Voyager Estate

Michael Wright (1937–2012) was the founder of Voyager Estate as it is known today, one of the distinguished wineries of Western Australia’s Margaret River region. A farmer and entrepreneur with a deep appreciation of the land, Wright purchased the existing vineyard in 1991 and renamed it Voyager Estate. The first vintage produced under his stewardship followed in 1992.

Wright brought to Voyager the same meticulous attention to detail that had characterised his agricultural interests. He studied the Estate’s soils closely, matching individual grape varieties to particular sites and microclimates, sometimes creating unusually shaped vineyard blocks to follow the natural character of the land.

His vision extended beyond winemaking. Inspired by visits to the Cape winelands of South Africa, Wright wanted Voyager Estate to offer visitors a generous and memorable experience. The Estate’s distinctive Cape Dutch architecture and gardens grew from this ambition, helping establish Voyager as both a serious wine producer and a celebrated Margaret River destination.

Wright’s commitment to farming, quality and excellence remains central to Voyager Estate today, with its MJW wines named in his honour and continuing his legacy.
