Roderick “Roddy” Meagher QC (1932–2011) was one of the great characters of the Australian legal world. Brilliant, erudite, eccentric and famously sharp-tongued, he practised at the New South Wales Bar before serving on the NSW Court of Appeal from 1989 to 2004. Meagher combined a formidable knowledge of equity with a love of language, history, art and argument. His judgments and conversation were often memorable for their wit and individuality. A co-author of the landmark text Equity: Doctrines and Remedies, he represented a distinctly old-school tradition of the Bar — intellectually rigorous, fiercely independent and impossible to confuse with anyone else.
